The Hidden Side Effects of Acupuncture

We’ve all been there: We hear of a new prescription medication and we get intrigued. Then we see the advertisement online, in our favorite magazine, or during a television show, and we’re dizzy from trying to read all of the possible side effects and contraindications one might expect should he or she choose to use that particular treatment. Dizziness is one thing, but death? Just when it seems there’s nothing safe to help us feel our very best, natural medicine — and in particular acupuncture — comes to the rescue with a worry-free solution.

Choosing the Natural Alternative
Taking a pill may seem like the easy solution to an ailment or ache, but it often means signing up for a lifetime of prescription-drug reliance. Who wants that? Typically speaking, natural approaches, such as acupuncture, massage, and chiropractic, may certainly be continued long-term, but they are designed to work fast and help almost immediately. Oh and did we mention that you don’t have to worry about going blind, being able to operate heavy machinery, or possibly dying when you go natural? There is that.

What Can You Expect from Acupuncture?
When you first visit your acupuncturist, it may feel a lot like going to your regular medical doctor in how the appointment progresses. You’ll fill out forms, she’ll ask you questions, and she’ll do an initial diagnosis to determine not only what the issue is but what the cause(s) of the condition may be. After all that’s completed, you can expect to lie on a massage-style table and have needles inserted into specific points on your body. The majority of patients don’t even feel the needles going in because they’re so small; however, if you ever feel discomfort, just tell your acupuncturist and she’ll readjust the needles.

The needles will stay in place for 15–30 minutes, during which time the lights in the room will be dimmed so you can relax. Many people fall asleep during this time of rest and regeneration. The acupuncturist will check on you, and when the time is complete, the needles will be removed. For some patients, other techniques, such as cupping, may also be used. Sometimes the acupuncturist will prescribe Chinese herbs to take at home after the appointment.

So What Are the Side Effects of Acupuncture?
Unlike that laundry list of possible symptoms you might have to suffer through after taking a doctor-prescribed medication for months on end, acupuncture has practically no adverse side effects. Mostly, patients leave their sessions feeling refreshed and reenergized. If cupping was involved, you may have some red marks left where the cups were. These resemble bruises, but they’re typically painless and are a sign that toxins are exiting the body.

The best part about acupuncture is that the side effects improve after the session ends! Although you might feel great immediately after the needles are removed, once your body’s energy resumes its natural flow, you’ll feel even better. There are very few health and wellness interventions that allow you to feel great in the days following the first treatment. Acupuncture is one of just a handful.
