Solutions for Low Libido

Low libido is a common symptom that many women in our care experience. Unfortunately, there is no great solution for this problem in the world of conventional medicine but as Doctors of Chinese Medicine, we have plenty of tools to help. Like any health or wellness problem the first thing to consider is “why is this happening?”. This answer will guide you to the appropriate solution.

There are a number of factors that can contribute to low libido in women. The first question to ask is “is this psychological(mental/emotional/stress), physical or a combination of the two”.

 Psychological causes include:

  •  Stress whether acute or chronic
  •  Problems with relationships (not limited to your romant
    ic relationship)
  • Chronic pain which is emotionally and psychologically draining.
  • Grief or trauma
  • Anxiety and/or depression
  • Overwhelm/ burnout

Physical causes include:

  •  Hormone imbalances
  • Thyroid disorders
  •  Estrogen dominance
  •  Perimenopause
  • Medication side-effects (including antidepressants and birth control)
  • Painful intercourse or vaginal dryness

Improving libido at home starts with taking an overall health assessment. Am I getting enough restful sleep? Managing stress appropriately and eating a nutrient dense diet that is adequate in healthy fats which are essential for hormone production? Am I taking medication that could possibly be contributing to this? Hormonal birth control and antidepressants are both known to decrease libido. If you are tired, stressed out and undernourished, it’s no surprise you are not interested in sex!

Communicating with your partner during this time is especially important because they may take your lack of libido personally. Let them know, it’s not about them and ask them to support you in finding answers and making changes. Their patience is key because it will take the pressure and stress off of you during this time. It might be helpful to schedule time with your partner without distractions so that you can connect. Touching and cuddling can help to increase oxytocin production which has been shown to improve female sexual dysfunction. A massage from your partner may be just the thing to get your hormones going again.

Remedies and treatments for low libido will be individual depending on the cause but can include counseling, acupuncture, supplements to re-balance hormones, herbs such as tribulus and black cohosh and even a sexy staycation with your partner to spend some quality time alone (without kids, pets or other distractions!)
