Constipation – an age-old problem treated with Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine

If you are hanging out with a group of friends, family, coworkers, you know that the topic of constipation is never going to come up in conversation.  But, be assured, in that group, one out of every 5 suffers from constipation.  It is such a common complaint, from the very young to the very old.  Often it starts in childhood, and never improves, so that you begin to accept that constipation is normal.  But if you suffer from the symptoms of constipation, like bloating, feeling of heaviness, pain, rectal bleeding, it’s time to do something about it.

You are probably already familiar with these standard recommendations to improve bowl function:

  1. Include fiber in your diet every day. Fiber containing foods include fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains.  Fiber supplements are also available.
  2. Drink plenty of water every day. Water hydrates the entire body, including the digestive system.
  3. Regular physical exercise. Any exercise will help, walking is fine as is any form of exercise.
  4. Strive for regular meal and bathroom times. Consistency in your routine can help digestion.
  5. Include probiotic rich foods such as yogurt with active cultures, kefir, fermented vegetables, kombucha.  You may consider a probiotic supplement.

If these suggestions have not helped, your medical doctor may suggest laxatives and other medications.  Remember, these only temporarily improve BMs, but they do not go to the source of the problem.  It may be time to see your Chinese Medicine Doctor who will work with you to help your body adapt and form a more regular, comfortable, non-medicated bowel habit.  I use a combination of acupuncture and a Chinese herbal formula, prepared just for you and the way your body functions.  This is not a generic treatment; this is specific to you and your constitution.
