When we think of applications for acupuncture, we typically think of aches and pains the body suffers, whether acute or chronic. But have you considered acupuncture as an alternative to other procedures, such as plastic surgery, Botox, or acne treatments?
Cosmetic acupuncture also called facial rejuvenation, focuses on the issues of the facial skin, including fine lines, wrinkles, and acne. The procedure of putting acupuncture needles in the face to enhance beauty and maintain a youthful appearance has been practiced in China and other parts of Asia for centuries, but it has just recently gained popularity in the US and Western countries.
Defining Cosmetic Acupuncture
[tweet_box]Much like traditional acupuncture, cosmetic acupuncture has the goal of balancing the body’s energy[/tweet_box] to remove blocks while creating a sense of wellbeing. The difference lies in what cosmetic acupuncture aims to do: encourage the body’s production of collagen, which gives the skin elasticity and promotes a radiant, youthful glow.
The difference, of course, is in where the needles are placed. By focusing them on the face and neck, the blood flow and collagen production is increased, leading to clear, smooth skin. The benefits can be seen for a long while and can appear as if the patient has had minor plastic surgery, Botox, or a skin peel — all done naturally, of course.
The Face and Body as a Whole
When a person who wishes to look younger heads to the day spa, the only thing they’re looking at is the presenting issue, e.g., wrinkles, sagging skin, or acne. However, when that same person schedules a session with a licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac.), that professional views not only the face but the whole body as well.
Why? Well, for the face to continue to look young and glowing, the rest of the body needs to support that health. For instance, if the spleen channel is deficient, the body is prone to loose skin, cellulite, and varicose veins. Your face wears the issues that your body is incurring, so while a facial might look and feel good for a few weeks, the effects of acupuncture are far longer lasting.
What to Expect
Facial acupuncture is much like whole-body acupuncture in that it begins with an assessment to determine needs and goals. Your acupuncturist will conduct an overall intake to see if you’re a good candidate for this type of treatment. Of course, if you have some long-worn wrinkles, you may not be. As with many facial procedures, it is best to catch and work to rectify issues earlier rather than later.
Typically, cosmetic acupuncture requires 5–15 treatments over the course of a couple of months. After the initial procedures are complete, it is important to continue on maintenance to keep the skin smooth and elastic and the blood flowing. Women often notice a marked improvement within this time, and the side effects are pretty remarkable, including increased energy, improved sleep, and more positive demeanor.
The cost for cosmetic acupuncture may well be in line with the cost of Botox and facials, although it is obviously much less expensive than invasive procedures such as plastic surgery. Most women opt for cosmetic acupuncture because of its natural approach and all-over benefits. And in the right office, acupuncture is just as relaxing and rejuvenating as a visit to your favorite day spa.
